About this repertoire
Pierre Boulez’s music has occupied a special place in Hélène Navasse’s artistic journey through solo flute works, soloist repertoire, ensemble works and orchestral repertoire. From Mémoriale (…explosante-fixe…originel) and Explosante-fixe… Transitoire VII to works such as Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna, his exploration of sound, form and musical space has remained a recurring point of reference throughout her engagement with contemporary music.
This page gathers selected traces of that repertoire: Mémoriale (…explosante-fixe…originel), Explosante-fixe… Transitoire VII and ensemble works including Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna. Rather than a chronological archive, the page reflects an ongoing artistic dialogue with Boulez’s music, its precision, volatility and structural clarity.

Interpreting Transitoire VII
The solo flute writing of Explosante-fixe… Transitoire VII is built from highly concentrated musical cells that transform and reappear throughout the work.
During preparation, recurring musical cells were mapped through colour coding in order to reveal relationships between the different sections of the work. This visual approach became an important tool for both memorisation and interpretation, helping to clarify the large-scale structure hidden within Boulez’s highly concentrated writing.

Alongside solo repertoire, Hélène Navasse has performed Boulez’s ensemble music, including Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna and other works from his chamber and ensemble catalogue.

Artistic focus
Boulez’s flute writing demands a particular combination of precision, flexibility and intensity. The instrument often acts as a point of ignition: a line that cuts through texture, transforms colour and articulates musical space.
For Hélène Navasse, this repertoire belongs to a wider artistic trajectory connecting French modernism, contemporary ensemble practice and the flute as a central voice in twentieth- and twenty-first-century music.
